When Unobserved

Cuando Nadie Mira

This work investigates the compelling inverse of the participatory universe theory: if reality requires a gaze to materialize, what transpires in the moment we avert our eyes?

When Unobserved immerses itself in the latent, enigmatic state of the unperceived, interrogating whether the world dissolves into absence, or conversely, whether a parallel ecosystem of presences exists—one that manifests solely in the absence of witnesses.

Visually, the piece transports the viewer to a vibrant, quasi-oneiric environment where the demarcations between the natural and the fantastical dissolve. The animal figure, rendered in an impossible shade of magenta, and the entity inhabiting the background do not appear to be posing for the viewer. Rather, the work captures them in the precise instant they believe themselves to be entirely alone. It is as though the artist has managed to glimpse this hidden reality through peripheral vision, arresting on the canvas the unsettling yet deeply familiar sensation of 'sensing a presence' within a space we presumed to be void.

The work engages in a dialogue with quantum physics’ findings regarding the observer effect, yet it transposes these principles into the realm of the mythical and the emotional. It posits that the unseen is not mere nothingness, but a field of pure potentiality where beings, dreams, and alternative realities coexist, actively evading the fixation of the direct gaze.

Through the lens of the Generative Gaze, this piece reminds us that art is, at its core, the audacious act of observing the invisible. To interrogate what transpires in the darkness, or within the profound solitude of objects, is the seminal principle of all creative endeavor.

When Unobserved is not merely a painting; it is an invitation to recognize that our culture, our myths, and our collective imagination are born precisely from that fertile, untamed space existing just beyond the threshold of our everyday perception.
